When the Emmy winnerannounced his departure from the showas of August 2018, this meant that the sitcom's 12th season would be its last. Once he made his decision, Molaro and co-creatorChuck Lorreheld a cast meeting where Parsons was allowed to tell everyone that he had decided to leave before revealing that his departure would also beend the showafter 12 seasons.
“There was a lot of crying in the room. Kaley in particular," recalled Lorre, 69, in the book. "It was a blow. And there was no way to soften it by letting them know. I didn't know any other way to do it."
At that time, several cast membersshared their thoughts publiclyabout the end of the show. Cuoco, 36, said his heart was "broken in two" by the news. “This trip was a dream come true and life changing,” he wrote via Instagram in August 2018. “Drowning in tears, we promise to bring you the best season yet.”
Mayim BialikFor her part, she addressed the situation on her blog, telling fans that she wanted to continue to "bring joy" to viewers for as long as possible. "Am I happy? Of course not," thebloomalum, 46, wrote at the time. “This has been my job since Melissa Rauch and I joined the regular cast in Season 4. I love my work. I love my co-stars and have so much appreciation for our incredible crew, our brave writers, our entire team, and our incredible fans.”
Several months before the series finale aired in May 2019, Parsons explained that he wanted to leave the show because he felt "innately it was time" to move on. "I was in shock. They just blew us away that day," said theyour roseThe 47-year-old former student spoke about the meeting where he found out he would no longer be playing Leonard. "And not necessarily surprised by Jim's decision, but because he didn't have that conversation with his castmates first to prepare us. So yeah, it could have been handled better. We're a family; let's talk. And I'm not even disagreeing with how Jim felt, because in many ways I felt the same way, I just didn't agree with the way it was handled.
Despite her feelings, however, Galecki admitted that she didn't think the show could go on without Parsons. “None of us, the actors, the writers, are comfortable doing the show without one of us,” he explained. "And we absolutely would not continue without Jim."

The 41-year-old UK native recalled feeling "a very physical reaction in my body" when he found out the show was ending. "I felt like a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders.
